Secara harfiah, ‘Skybattle’ yang merupakan acara tahunan SMA Labschool Kebayoran dapat diartikan sebagai ‘Pertempuran di Langit’. Tentunya pertempuran seperti dilukiskan melalui judul acara, diharapkan berlangsung sengit, akbar dan penuh semangat. Rugby Festival yang diadakan dalam rangkaian acara inipun terbukti demikian!

Dengan dukungan tim Chalkway Productions dari STP Trisakti dan Jakarta Banteng Rugby Club selaku pihak yang turut menyelenggarakan, Skybattle ’11 Rugby Festival dimulai pada pagi dimana langit menantang bersamaan dengan turunnya hujan lebat yang mengguyur lapangan.

Namun udara dingin dan lumpur yang menggenang tidak menyurutkan semangat para peserta dalam pertarungan Rugby Sevens tingkat SMA se-JABODETABEK ini! Tepat pukul 07.00 pagi, Lapangan GOR Pertamina Simprug menjadi saksi kehangatan para tim rugby sekolah menengah atas yang telah berkumpul, mempersiapkan diri untuk menantang sesama tim dalam olahraga yang keras namun sangat terkenal akan sportifitasnya tersebut.

“Kami sempat mengkhawatirkan jumlah pengunjung maupun kondisi lapangan,” kata Kak Didi dari STP Trisakti yang juga merupakan salah satu pemain handal JBRC, “namun cuaca membaik, penonton berdatangan dan seluruh pertandingan dapat dilakukan tanpa terjadinya cedera yang serius.”

Pertandingan pool dilangsungkan hingga tengah hari, diselingi berbagai atraksi dan performance dari musisi dan dancers, beatbox hingga bartending yang dilakukan para mahasiswa STP Trisakti. Suasana ceria terus berlanjut dengan diiringi musik yang dimainkan serta komentator-komentator kocak dari para ‘senior’ ruggers dari Jakarta Banteng Rugby Club.

JBRC juga menyelenggarakan pertandingan perpisahan untuk David Reid, salah seorang pemain JBRC yang sebentar lagi akan berangkat ke Australia untuk melanjutkan pendidikannya. ‘JBRC Batik’ & ‘JBRC Old Boys’ bertarung dengan sengit dan keras dimana seluruh pemain berusaha maksimal untuk memberikan ‘Reidy’ pelepasan hangat melalui pertandingan Rugby yang seru. Hasil 0-0 memang pantas karena sengitnya usaha kedua tim yang merupakan saudara-saudara dalam Rugby tersebut.

“Saya akan selalu mengenang hari ini,” kata David Reid dengan mata yang sedikit berkaca-kaca, entah oleh karena luapan emosi atau terkena lumpur, “Sangat bangga untuk menjadi bagian dari Banteng Brotherhood… dan sangat senang juga melihat para penari-penari yang cantik-cantik tadi… hahaha….”

Seluruh tim yang berpartisipasi memainkan tiap pertandingan secara keras namun sportif dan terlihat betapa pelatihan yang telah diberikan selama ini, disertai keinginan untuk belajar dari para pemain yang masih relatif belia, menghasilkan pertarungan dengan tingkat permainan yang semakin membaik dari acara-acara serupa sebelumnya. SMA Pangudi Luhur yang merupakan ‘anak bawang’ dalam kancah rugby SMA Jabodetabek menunjukkan determinasinya yang tinggi walaupun baru berlatih selama kurang dari dua minggu. Mereka menempatkan timnya dalam final Britmindo Plate melawan Labschool B.

“Wah… acara ini meriah sekali!” kata Fadli selaku Ketua Panitia Rugby Festival Skybattle ’11 yang juga merupakan pemain SMA Labschool, “kami sangat gembira dengan antusiasme sekolah-sekolah yang ikut serta dan juga penonton yang hadir. Semoga semakin banyak orang yang cinta sama Rugby di Indonesia.”

Pada pertandingan final sebelumnya, Jakarta Combined Schools merebut AEL Bowl setelah memenangkan pertandingan melawan Darunnajah 2. Suatu hal yang sangat menarik adalah hadirnya Zoe, pemain JCS yang merupakan satu-satunya putri yang bermain pada divisi ‘tackle’ putra kali ini. Tak pelak, setiap kali Zoe mendapatkan bola maupun melakukan tackle, ia mendapatkan tepuk tangan dan decak kagum dari seluruh penonton yang hadir, terutama dari arah tenda SMA Pangudi Luhur.

Di Britmindo Plate Final, pertandingan sempat diperpanjang karena kegigihan Pangudi Luhur mencetak try melawan SMA Labschool di detik-detik akhir waktu pertandingan reguler. Tim dari PL kemudian menunjukkan karakter pantang menyerahnya dengan mencetak ‘Golden Try’ pada saat perpanjangan waktu untuk membawa pulang penghargaan Rugby pertama untuk sekolahnya.

Tim Putri dari Labschool Kebayoran menggondol Laing O’Rourke Cup dengan mengalahkan Tim Putri SMA Al-Chasanah pada pertandingan final melalui aksi gemilang MVP Putri Inez didukung oleh kawan-kawannya yang bermain sangat apik dan lincah.

“Untuk kami dari Chalkway Productions, ini merupakan pertama kalinya untuk membantu menyelenggarakan acara seperti ini,” kata Hani selaku perwakilan dari Chalkway, “tapi ternyata seru juga ya!”

Pada pertandingan final untuk Putra, SMA Darunnajah terlalu tangguh untuk Tim SMA Al-Chasanah dan berhak memborong Laing O’Rourke Cup. Pemain SMA Darunnajah, Adi juga dinobatkan sebagai MVP Putra.

“Suasana ini luar biasa membanggakan untuk kami di JBRC,” kata Ketua Jakarta Banteng Rugby Club Fikri Al-Azhar, “inilah wujud nilai-nilai Rugby yang terbentuk dalam penyelenggaraan turnamen yang sukses. Latihan yang dilakukan anak-anak Banteng di sekolah-sekolah, kerjasama dan saling mendukung berbuah manis dengan meriahnya acara ini.”

“Banyak anggota Banteng yang telah berhasil masuk ke Timnas baik untuk Rugby XVs maupun Rugby 7s, tapi regenerasi dan peremajaan pemain serta perkembangan ke basis pemain lokal yang lebih giat lagi merupakan idaman kita,” lanjut Fikri. “Anak-anak SMA bahkan SMP & SD, baik putra maupun putri akan menjadi andalan Rugby Indonesia masa depan…”

Skybattle pun usai dan lapangan berangsur-angsur sepi ditinggalkan para pemain rugby junior. Mereka bahkan tidak lagi menghiraukan pertandingan sepakbola yang selanjutnya dipertandingkan… Hati dan jiwa anak muda di Indonesia kini telah sungguh-sungguh tersentuh oleh Si Bola Lonjong!

Setelah sukses dengan pelaksanaan Kejuaraan Rugby Sevens Britmindo Banteng Skybattle pada bulan Februari lalu, Jakarta Banteng Rugby Club selaku klub Pengda PRUI DKI Jakarta kembali menggelar turnamen serupa yaitu Kejuaraan Rugby Sevens Banteng-ANTICC the 6th pada hari Rabu 24 November 2010 di GOR Pertamina Simprug.

Diikuti empat tim putra dan tiga tim putri dari sekolah-sekolah menengah atas binaan Jakarta Banteng kegiatan tersebut berjalan secara meriah dan dibarengi oleh tingkat permainan yang semakin membaik. Acara tersebut dibuka secara resmi oleh Bapak Jamil dari DISORDA DKI Jakarta.

“Ini adalah kejuaraan kedua yang telah saya hadiri dan meningkatnya kuantitas maupun kualitas pemain patut diacungi jempol.” kata beliau, “Saya berharap anak-anak yang berpartisipasi dapat terus meningkatkan prestasinya dan tetap menjaga sportifitas rugby yang terkenal itu.”

“Memang merupakan program kerja kami untuk tidak saja memperkenalkan olahraga rugby union pada para generasi muda tetapi untuk juga menyediakan kompetisi dan turnamen agar mereka terus mengasah kemampuannya,” ujar Denny selaku Ketua Umum Jakarta Banteng, “Berkat sponsor-sponsor kami Laing O’Rourke, Britmindo dan AEL kami tidak saja dapat berlatih tapi juga turut melatih mereka yang muda-muda dan hasilnya terlihat banyak wajah baru yang bermain dan itu berarti semakin banyak atlet berpotensi yang lahir.”

Pada final putri, SMA 3 Jakarta menang atas SMA Al-Chasanah 20-5 sementara pada final putra SMA Darunnajah mengalahkan SMA Al-Chasanah 17-5.

Kejuaraan yang sempat disertai hujan yang membuat permukaan lapangan licin dan berlumpur itu menjadikan pertandingan demi pertandingan berjalan sangat ketat dan sulit namun para pemain tetap merasa puas dengan digelarnya acara ini.

“Kami memang perlu banyak berlatih,” kata Ditia salah satu pemain putri SMA Labschool Kebayoran, “tetapi kami senang dan sebenarnya ingin sekali adanya turnamen rugby XV’s juga yang digelar di masa yang akan datang.”

“Ya… kami juga memang belum puas dengan hasil yang kami dapatkan kali ini,” sambung Habibie selaku kapten tim putra SMA 3, “tapi kami akan terus berlatih agar dapat lebih baik bersaing dengan tim-tim yang lebih berpengalaman.”

Cabang olahraga Rugby 7’s akan dipertandingkan pada Olimpiade Musim Panas, Rio de Janeiro 2016 dan sedang giat dipopulerkan di seluruh dunia karena memberikan kesempatan pada pemain dengan postur tubuh relatif kecil sekalipun untuk dapat bersaing pada olahraga rugby.

After the success of February’s Britmindo Banteng Skybattle High School Sevens held last February, Jakarta Banteng Rugby Club as part of PRUI DKI Jakarta Union held the Banteng-NATICC the 6th Rugby Sevens Tournament for high schools on Wednesday 24 November 2010 at Pertamina Simprug Field, Jakarta.

Participating were four boys teams and three girls teams from schools where Jakarta Banteng conduct rugby development. The event was attended and officially opened by Mr. Jamil of the Jakarta Sports Bureau.

“This is the second tournament that I’ve attended and the increasing number of participants along with the increase in players skills is admirable,” says Mr. Jamil, “I hope the kids continue their rugby and uphold the values which the sport is so famous for.”

“Part of our program is not only to introduce rugby and develop it to the youth but also to provide tournaments such as this so they can improve their rugby,” says Denny, Chairman of Jakarta Banteng, “Thanks to our sponsors Laing O’Rourke, Britmindo and AEL we can not only train our first team but also train at schools and the results can be seen here today. More players means more potential for the future of rugby here.”

In the girls Cup final, SMA 3 Jakarta defeated SMA Al-Chasanah 20-5 whilst SMA Darunnajah went on to beat SMA Al-Chasanah 17-5 in the boys Cup final.

The tournament was occasionally accompanied by rain which made the pitch slippery and difficult but meant that each game was a hard-fought match.

“We definitely have to train harder,” says Ditia of SMA Labschool Kebayoran girl’s team, “but we definitely enjoy playing and even hope that maybe one day we can have a XV’s tournament too.”

“We weren’t too happy with our results either,” says Habibie, captain of the SMA 3 boys team, “but we’ll carry on practicing so we cn compete with the more experienced teams in the future.”

Rugby 7’s will be competed in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games and is actively being developed around the world as it gives players with relatively smaller body size the chance to compete in the Game of Rugby.

2010 XP Bali Rugby Fest 9-10 October 2010 Report

The weekend of October 9th and 10th saw over 500 rugby players and supporters descend on the island of Bali for the 16th annual XP Xclusive Property Bali Rugby Fest. This year’s tournament consisted of 3 divisions: Open Men’s 10’s, Open Women’s 7’s and for the first time, the Indonesian 7’s National Championships.

Held at the picturesque Canggu Club, Bali, play started at 8am sharp on Day 1 with 26 teams from New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia competing in a total of 39 games running through till nearly 8pm. The hot conditions were matched with skillful play on the field. Not even an untimely monsoonal downpour in the early afternoon could dampen the atmosphere that was building as play progressed through to the evening.

At the completion of the first days play, the pre tournament favorites were holding true to form. Finishing top of their respective pools in the Open Men’s 10’s were the Australian side, Nedlands, and NZ’s High School Old Boys. Though the composite side of the Naga Bush Turkeyz along with the Jakarta Komodos would make sure the two top qualifiers didn’t have things all their own way. The two Darwin sides, the Indigenous Bunnies and Southern Bunnies, were caught in a logjam at the top of the Women’s 7’s division together with Singapore’s Institute of Management. In the Indonesian 7’s the front-runners for Sunday’s final looked to be the Jakarta Bantengs and the Koteka’s from Papua, but the Sengatta Hornbills were not too far off the pace and an upset was a distinct possibility.

Sunday saw Day 2 of the tournament commence in near perfect weather, with round 4 of the Women’s kicking things off before moving into the quarter final rounds. There was to be no repeat of the rain from Saturday and by time the afternoon rolled around a large and vocal crowd had gathered to enjoy the finals.

In the Indonesian Women’s 7’s, the Bali Barbarians, consisting of ladies from Bandung, Jakarta and Bali went up against the Menaga women’s side from Tamika. It was truly great to see the Indonesian women enjoy themselves in a great spectacle with Bali getting up 15-0 and in the process, wining the inaugural PRUI Women’s National 7’s title. Next up was the Indonesian Men’s Plate final where a physical Sengatta team proved too strong for the local Bali development side winning by 3 tries to Bali’s 1. The Open Men’s Bowl final was contested by the Naga Dragons from Sumbawa who won out in a tight one against the Jakarta based French expat side, Jago Dulu, 7-5 much to the delight of the large group of Naga supporters and cheerleaders.

The Open Men’s Plate was a cracker with perennial rivals the Jakarta Komodos renewing old acquaintances with the home team, the Bali Chili’s. An arm wrestle if ever there was one, at the end of regular play there was nothing separating the two sides with the score tied up at 7-7. The first 4 minutes of extra time couldn’t produce a result but from the kick off for the second period of extra time, the Chili’s forced a turnover, rumbled the ball up the centre for two phases then passed it back to Izzy Kadir to knock the drop goal over from 35 meters out. The home fans went crazy as the Chili’s had finally beaten their big city rivals for the first time in 2 years.

The Open Women’s final saw Australian side, the Darwin Indigenous Bunnies, take on SIM (Singapore Institute of Management). The Indigenous Bunnies had skill and size and this combination proved to be too much for the smaller Singaporeans, who, despite playing with a lot of heart and intensity, were unable to overcome the odds. Final score 19-5 to the Darwin Indigenous Bunnies. Tournament MVP, Bo Delacruz, was outstanding in all facets of play and even showed the men up slotting conversions from the sidelines on several occasions.

The PRUI Indonesian Men’s National 7’s final was another nail bitter and the standard of play on show was indicative of just how far Indonesian rugby has progressed in the past 5 years. The Kotekas power game was personified by Rhino front rower Nico Joku, who’s ball carrying produced meters on every charge. In the past, the Papuans have had the speed out wide, but this year it was the Bantengs who had the edge on the flanks with a speedy set of outside backs looking dangerous with ball in hand. As with the Open Plate final, extra time was required and this time Michael Bavin was the hero when he crashed over to score the winning try for a memorable 24-19 victory. MVP for the division was Banteng forward Daniel Rahadian Nugroho. The award capped off a memorable year for Nugroho who was also voted Indonesia’s player of the tournament at this year IRB A5N tournament held in Jakarta.

The penultimate game, the XP Xclusive Property Open Men’s 10’s Cup final, was to be a battle royal between the Nedland Rugby Club of Perth, Australia, and Canterbury, New Zealand’s High School Old Boys (HSOB). Playing extended 10 minute halves, the level on display was worthy of a major final with both sides putting their bodies on the line for the trophy and bragging rights. Nedland drew first blood with an unconverted try to take a 5 point lead. HSOB had several chances, but were unable to turn pressure into points. Nedland pulled further ahead to extend their lead to 12 and time was fast running out for the Kiwi team. A late consolation try to HSOB was converted but when the whistle blew it was the Australian’s that emerged victors by 12-7. Open’s MVP went to HSOB’s Nick Muir who had a strong tournament but was unable to influence the final result.

Trophy presentation was followed by the presentation dinner, enjoyment of Heineken’s fine product, beats from DJ Flic and a massive after party at Eikon nightclub in Kuta. All in all another great tournament played in the true spirit that is Rugby Union.
